Une première église Saint-Martin est mentionnée à Sarnico dans les actes de l’évêque Giovanni da Scanzo en 1304. Une nouvelle église est construite en 1505. la population augmentant, une nouvelle église est reconstruite en 1727 dans le style baroque et consacrée en 1880. La façade date de 1777 et  a une statue de saint Martin évêque dans une niche au troisième niveau d’élévation.

Le maître-autel conserve le retable de Francesco Capella peint entre 1760 et 1765 représentant saint Martin évêque avec l’empereur Valentinien(SULPICE SEVERE, Dialogues, II, 5, 5-10.), entouré d’un tableau figurant la charité de saint Martin et l’apparition du Christ enveloppé du manteau la nuit suivante.

L’autel figure la suite du tableau central du retable : le trône de Valentinien qui prend feu, ce qui contraint l’empereur à se lever et à recevoir saint Martin.

D’autres tableaux figurent le miracle du pin et la mort de saint Martin. La porte gauche de l’église figurent une charité de saint Martin en bas-relief.

 

The first St. Martin’s church in Sarnico is mentioned in the deeds of Bishop Giovanni da Scanzo in 1304. A new church was built in 1505. As the population grew, a new church was rebuilt in 1727 in the Baroque style and consecrated in 1880. The façade dates from 1777 and has a statue of Saint Martin the bishop in a niche on the third floor.

The high altar conserves the altarpiece by Francesco Capella, painted between 1760 and 1765, depicting Saint Martin as bishop with the Emperor Valentinian (SULPICE SEVERE, Dialogues, II, 5, 5-10.), surrounded by a painting depicting Saint Martin’s charity and the appearance of Christ wrapped in the cloak the following night.

The altar shows the continuation of the central painting of the altarpiece: Valentinian’s throne catching fire, forcing the emperor to rise and receive Saint Martin.

Other paintings depict the miracle of the pin and the death of Saint Martin. The left door of the church features a bas-relief of Saint Martin’s charity.
