Pont saint Martin est une commune italienne située dans le Val d’Aoste. Située sur le tronçon commun entre la Via Francigena et la Via sancti Martini, elle est le lieu d’une légende dans laquelle saint Martin, se rendant à Rome, passe par cette ville. Mais la passerelle traversant le Lys a été emporté par une inondation. Martin reste plusieurs jours sur place et finit par rassurer les habitants inquiets de ne plus avoir de pont. Il fait alors un pacte avec le Diable afin qu’il construise un pont  dans la nuit en échange de l’âme du premier être vivant qui le franchira. Le pont une fois construit, un enfant jouant à la balle avec son chien la lance sur le pont et le chien devient le premier à le traverser, rendant le Diable rage de colère, quittant les lieux. Cette légende donne son nom à la commune.  En réalité, le pont remonte au Ier siècle avant Jésus-Christ et faisait partie de la route consulaire des Gaules.

Il existe une tradition liée à cette légende : à la fin du carnaval, un pantin rouge pendu au centre du pont est brûlé.

 

Pont saint Martin is an Italian municipality in the Valle d’Aosta. Situated on the common stretch between the Via Francigena and the Via sancti Martini, it is the site of a legend in which Saint Martin, on his way to Rome, passes through this town. But the footbridge crossing the Lys had been washed away by a flood. Martin stayed on the spot for several days and eventually reassured the inhabitants, who were worried about having no bridge. He then made a pact with the Devil to build a bridge in the night in exchange for the soul of the first living creature to cross it. Once the bridge had been built, a child playing with a ball with his dog threw it over the bridge and the dog was the first to cross, making the Devil furious and leaving the scene. This legend gave the town its name. In reality, the bridge dates back to the 1st century BC and was part of the consular road of Gaul.

There is a tradition linked to this legend: at the end of Carnival, a red puppet hanging from the centre of the bridge is burnt.
