L’église Saint-Michel de Savigny-en-Véron abrite, dans son transept, un maître-autel dédié à saint Martin. Ce maître-autel est surmonté d’une statue de saint Martin et a trois bas-reliefs représentant des scènes de la vie de saint Martin.

La statue figure saint Martin évêque, mitré, portant sa crosse de la main gauche et faisant le geste de bénédiction de la main droite.

Le registre supérieur du maître-autel a deux panneaux séparés par le tabernacle. Le panneau de gauche représente une messe de saint Martin, qui prie devant l’autel doré sur lequel se trouve une coupe, avec une boule de feu au-dessus de la tête, nimbé, entouré de quatre autres moines en prière. Les personnages sont blancs sur fond marron. Le panneau de droite figure une charité de saint Martin.  Saint Martin, à cheval, coupe la chlamyde et regarde le pauvre s’en drapant d’une partie. Le pauvre regarde saint Martin. Les personnages sont blancs et dorés sur fond bleu ciel.

Le registre inférieur présente une translation de saint Martin, et figure saint Martin mort, en prière, sur un brancard porté par quatre moines. Un moine se trouve devant le cortège, portant un cierge, et deux autres moines suivent, en prière.

Le maître-autel n’est pas daté ni signé, mais il doit dater du XIXe siècle, l’église Saint-Michel étant ouverte en 1848, sur les plans de l’architecte Gustave Guérin.

 

 

 

The church of Saint-Michel in Savigny-en-Véron has a high altar dedicated to Saint Martin in its transept. This high altar is surmounted by a statue of Saint Martin and has three bas-reliefs representing scenes from the life of Saint Martin.

The statue shows St Martin as a bishop, mitred, carrying his crook in his left hand and making the gesture of blessing with his right hand.

The upper register of the high altar has two panels separated by the tabernacle. The left-hand panel depicts a mass of St Martin, praying before the golden altar on which a cup is placed, with a ball of fire above his head, nimbed, surrounded by four other monks at prayer. The figures are white on a brown background. The panel on the right shows a charity of Saint Martin. Saint Martin, on horseback, cuts the chlamydia and looks at the poor man draped with part of it. The poor man is looking at Saint Martin. The figures are white and gold on a sky blue background.

The lower register shows a translation of St. Martin, with St. Martin dead, praying, on a stretcher carried by four monks. A monk is in front of the procession, carrying a candle, and two other monks follow, praying.

The high altar is neither dated nor signed, but it must date from the 19th century, as the church of Saint-Michel was opened in 1848, to the plans of the architect Gustave Guérin.
