La paroisse d’Echemiré est constituée autour du château fortifié au XIe siècle. Elle est un possession de l’abbaye Saint-Julien de Tours par l’entremise du religieux Rainaud, fils de Gédéon d’Echemiré, entre 1081 et 1090. Un prieuré Saint-Bibien est alors installé (jusqu’au XVIIIe siècle).

C’est une église en croix-latine, la croisée des transepts est surmontée d’un clocher carré. La nef est refaite au début du XVIIIe siècle mais l’église subit un abandon après la Révolution française. Son mobilier disparaît. C’est en 1864 que l’architecte angevin Heulin restaure la nef.

 

The parish of Echemiré was built around the fortified castle in the 11th century. Between 1081 and 1090, it came into the possession of the abbey of Saint-Julien de Tours through the intermediary of the monk Rainaud, son of Gédéon d’Echemiré, and a priory of Saint-Bibien was established (until the 18th century).

This is a Latin cross church, with the transepts surmounted by a square bell tower. The nave was rebuilt in the early 18th century, but the church was abandoned after the French Revolution. Its furnishings disappeared. It was in 1864 that the Anjou architect Heulin restored the nave.
