L’église Saint-Martin de Burcin est construite au XIXe siècle. Elle est dédiée à saint Martin car c’est le prénom du prieur d’Oyeu, la ville voisine. L’église est représentée sur le blason de la ville.
Elle abrite une grande fresque représentant la charité de saint Martin, réalisée par Luc Barbier, un peintre lyonnais, en 1938.
Au centre, saint Martin est à cheval, vêtu en soldat romain, nimbé et casqué, en train de couper son manteau avec son glaive. Le mendiant barbu est vêtu d’une forme de toge bleue, à l’avant du cheval, en train de tenir la partie du manteau qui va lui revenir. Au dessus de la charité est écrit, dans un cartouche : « A saint Martin soldat charitable + moine intrépide évêque de Tours ».
La partie haute, à gauche de la fresque, saint Martin moine dessine les plans de Ligugé en construction à l’arrière-plan. Dans le cartouche est écrit : « Bâtissant chapelles et monastères ». En dessous, il renverse un temple et brandissant la croix. Dans le cartouche est écrit : « Avec le souffle du ciel renversant les temples païens ». De l’autre côté, en haut, il délivre un homme prisonniers de serpents crachant du feu. Dans le cartouche est écrit : « Délivrant les possédés chassant les démons ». En dessous, il est représenté en évêque , nimbé et mitré, bénissant la foule de la main droite. Un homme et une femme sont agenouillé à ses pieds, et à sa droite des soldats en cote de maille, tunique et bouclier avec une croix rouge (comme une représentation de croisé).
La fresque est surmontée de la phrase : « Je n’ai pas peur pour moi car dieu assiste dans le danger ceux qui ne doutent point de lui ». Il est écrit à ses pieds : « Et quand j’aurais la foi jusqu’à transporter les montagnes si je n’ai la charité je ne suis rien. »
The church of Saint-Martin de Burcin was built in the 19th century. It is dedicated to Saint Martin, the first name of the prior of the neighbouring town of Oyeu. The church is depicted on the town’s coat of arms.
It houses a large fresco depicting the charity of Saint Martin, painted by Luc Barbier, a painter from Lyon, in 1938.
In the centre, Saint Martin is on horseback, dressed as a Roman soldier, nimbed and helmeted, cutting off his cloak with his sword. The bearded beggar is dressed in a blue toga, at the front of the horse, holding the part of the cloak that will be his. Above the charity is written in a cartouche: « To Saint Martin, charitable soldier + intrepid monk, bishop of Tours ».
In the upper part, on the left of the fresco, Saint Martin the monk is drawing the plans for Ligugé under construction in the background. The cartouche reads: « Building chapels and monasteries ». Below, he overturns a temple and brandishes the cross. The cartouche reads: « With the breath of heaven overthrowing the pagan temples ». On the other side, at the top, he delivers a man trapped by fire-breathing snakes. The cartouche reads: « Delivering the possessed, casting out demons ». Below, he is depicted as a bishop, nimbed and mitred, blessing the crowd with his right hand. A man and a woman kneel at his feet, and to his right are soldiers in chain mail, tunic and shield with a red cross (like a representation of a crusader).
The fresco is surmounted by the phrase: « I am not afraid for myself, for God assists those in danger who do not doubt him ». At his feet is written: « And though I have faith to move mountains, if I do not have charity, I am nothing. »
