L’église Saint-Martin de Beaupréau était située près d’un prieuré de moines bénédictins de l’abbaye Saint-Serge d’Angers. Elle est dédicacée en 1062 suite à l’autorisation par Foulque Nerra de développer un bourg autour du prieuré. La paroisse est séparée du prieuré au XIIIe siècle. L’église est agrandie au XIIIe siècle avec l’ajout de bas-côté mais est fortement abîmée durant la Révolution française. Elle est démolie et une nouvelle église est reconstruite en 1894. L’église a un ensemble de sept vitraux figurants plusieurs scènes de la vie de saint Martin, œuvre du maître verrier angevin Jean Clamens, dont une conversion de la mère de saint Martin. Une charité de saint Martin est sculptée en bas-relief sur le tympan, au dessus de la porte centrale de la façade.

 

 

The church of Saint-Martin de Beaupréau was located near a priory of Benedictine monks from the Saint-Serge abbey in Angers. It was dedicated in 1062 following Foulque Nerra’s authorisation to develop a town around the priory. The parish was separated from the priory in the 13th century. The church was enlarged in the 13th century with the addition of side aisles, but was badly damaged during the French Revolution. It was demolished and a new church was rebuilt in 1894. The church has a set of seven stained glass windows depicting several scenes from the life of Saint Martin, the work of Angevin master stained glass artist Jean Clamens, including a conversion of Saint Martin’s mother. Saint Martin’s charity is sculpted in bas-relief on the tympanum, above the central door of the façade.
