L’ancien nom de Martigné-Briand est Martineium, qui est relié à saint Martin. La chapelle Saint-Martin-des-Noyers est construite au XVIe siècle à l’endroit où une légende raconte que saint Martin se serait arrêté un jour de grosse chaleur. Après une prière, il a frappé le sol et une source miraculeuse a jailli. Un bassin de pierre a été aménagé au XVIe siècle pour recueillir l’eau, qui était réputée pour soigner les fièvres. Située au bord du Layon, elle se trouve à 5 km du centre de la commune.
