La ville d’Eisenstadt se trouve en Autriche, à une dizaine de kilomètres de la frontière hongroise. Elle appartenait à la Hongrie royale et son nom hongrois est Kismarton.

La cathédrale de la ville est consacrée à saint Martin, saint patron Burgenland, dont Eisenstadt est la capitale. Celle-ci a été construite en lieu et place d’une chapelle et est mentionnée pour la première fois dans des documents de 1264, sous la mention « Capella Sancti Martini ». la cathédrale actuelle a été fondée par le seigneur de la ville Hans Siebenhirter au milieu de XVe siècle. La nef est achevée en 1495, la tour, au nord, est construite en 1520. une tour sud était prévue mais celle-ci n’a jamais vu le jour. Un incendie en 1589 a provoqué l’effondrement de la nef. L’église est restaurée trente ans plus tard. Une crypte est creusée en 1716 à la demande du curé Matthias Marckhl et sert de crypte épiscopale depuis 1962.

La voûte du chœur est refaite en 1904 dans le cadre d’une « re-gothification ». Les fenêtres rondes ont été remplacées par des fenêtres à arcs brisés et ornées de vitraux. L’ensemble de la cathédrale a été restaurée en 2002 et 2003 et un mobilier moderne, réalisé par Brigitte Kowanz, a été installé.

L’église conserve une relique de saint Martin et, à l’extérieur, une statue figure saint Martin en évêque, mitré, en habit et tenant sa crosse de la main gauche, avec un mendiant à se pied, agenouillé et appuyé sur une béquille.

The church retains a relic of Saint Martin and, outside, a statue of Saint Martin as a bishop, mitred, in habit and holding his crosier in his left hand, with a beggar on his feet, kneeling and leaning on a crutch. .
