L’abbaye de Saint-Martin de Tournai comptait un total de 69 moines à la fin du XIVe siècle et possédait un domaine qui était l’un des plus importants de Belgique actuelle. Ce domaine comprenait, vers 1290, une quarantaine de prieurés, 44 autels, plus de 20 maisons rien qu’à Tournai, une vingtaine de moulins, environ 350 hectares de bois, des biens dans au moins vingt localités et l’exercice des droits de justice en de nombreux endroits.
En 1349, le domaine était évalué approximativement, à 5000 hectares; le monastère possédait à cette date plus de 50 maisons à Tournai, il percevait des cens et des rentes sur une cinquantaine de localités et l’étendue de ses fiefs dans le Tournaisis s’élevait à environ 160 bonniers; ses revenus enfin oscillaient entre 6000 et 9000 livres par an.
L’Hôtel de Ville de Tournai occupe une partie de l’ancienne abbaye bénédictine de Saint-Martin. Ce monastère du XIe siècle a été supprimé en 1797 (Révolution Française). La plupart des bâtiments, notamment l’église, ont disparu. Il ne reste de l’ancienne abbaye que le cloître du XVe siécle.
Le bâtiment principal encore utilisé par la marie fut élevé en 1763 sous l’abbatiat de Robert Delzenne, d’après les plans de l’architecte Laurent Dewez.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Abbey of Saint-Martin in Tournai had a total of 69 monks at the end of the 14th century and possessed one of the largest estates in modern Belgium. Around 1290, this estate included some forty priories, 44 altars, more than 20 houses in Tournai alone, some twenty mills, about 350 hectares of woodland, property in at least twenty localities and the exercise of legal rights in many places.
In 1349, the domain was evaluated at approximately 5,000 hectares; the monastery owned more than 50 houses in Tournai at that date, it collected cens and rents on about fifty localities and the extent of its fiefdoms in the Tournaisis area amounted to about 160 boroughs; its income finally oscillated between 6,000 and 9,000 pounds per year.
The Town Hall of Tournai occupies part of the former Benedictine abbey of Saint-Martin. This 11th century monastery was abolished in 1797 (French Revolution). Most of the buildings, including the church, have disappeared. All that remains of the former abbey is the 15th century cloister.
The main building still used by the maria was built in 1763 under the abbatiate of Robert Delzenne, according to the plans of the architect Laurent Dewez.
