L’église Saint-Martin d’Hauteville-Gondon est reconstruite après 1691, année de sa démolition pour cause de configuration de terrain ne permettant pas d’agrandissement du bâtiment. La première est attestée dès le XIIe siècle par un document paroissial qui la cite en 1170.

L’église de la fin du XVIIe siècle est plus grande. Elle se compose d’une nef de trois travées et de deux bas-côté, son chœur est de plan carré ainsi que d’une sacristie qui est couverte en appentis et accolée au côté nord du chœur. Son chevet est adossé à la pente et sa façade s’ouvre sur la vallée.

Dans l’église, se trouve le retable de l’autel majeur, qui serait l’oeuvre de Joseph-Marie Martel de Comperbogno, qui est en trois parties et qui repose sur un grand soubassement. La partie centrale est un tableau se situant au-dessus de l’autel majeur : on y voit saint Martin en soldat romain, casqué partageant son manteau avec le mendiant qui est assis part terre, adossé à un arbre, avec une canne dans sa main gauche. Au-dessus de la tête de saint Martin se trouve le Christ Rédempteur assis sur un nuage, entouré d’anges. Son vêtement est rouge et il porte une croix sur son bras gauche.

Ce tableau est entouré par des statues des docteurs de l’Église et des Anges.

 

The church of Saint-Martin d’Hauteville-Gondon was rebuilt after 1691, when it was demolished because the terrain did not allow the building to be enlarged. The first church is attested to in the 12th century by a parish document which mentions it in 1170.

The late 17th century church is larger. It consists of a nave of three bays and two aisles, its choir is square in plan as well as a sacristy which is covered by a lean-to roof and adjoined to the north side of the choir. Its chevet backs onto the slope and its façade opens onto the valley.
In the church is the altarpiece of the main altar, which is said to be the work of Joseph-Marie Martel de Comperbogno, and which is in three parts and rests on a large base. The central part is a painting above the main altar: it shows Saint Martin as a Roman soldier, wearing a helmet and sharing his cloak with the beggar who is sitting on the ground, leaning against a tree, with a cane in his left hand. Above St. Martin’s head is Christ the Redeemer seated on a cloud, surrounded by angels. His garment is red and he carries a cross on his left arm.

The painting is surrounded by statues of the Doctors of the Church and Angels.
