Le tableau de la charité de saint Martin a été peint à Rome par Jean-Victor Schnetz, signé et daté de 1824. Il est présenté la même année au Salon. Aussitôt acheté par l’État, il envoyé à Tours en réponse à la demande faite en 1821 par le coadjuteur de la cathédrale, désireux d’aménager la chapelle paroissiale dédiée à saint Martin, dans le grand retable du bras nord du transept de la cathédrale de Tours, à son emplacement actuel. Ses dimensions sont de 3,73×2,95m
Il est classé aux Monuments historiques le 10 novembre 1928.
