L’église Saint-Martin au Val est située à environ un kilomètre au sud du centre ville médiéval de Chartres, dans un quartier en bordure de l’Eure. La construction de l’église actuelle remonte au XIIè siècle comme abbatiale d’un monastère bénédictin puis église d’un prieuré, mais des sarcophages (d’anciens évêques de Chartres?) du VIè siècle ont été reconnus dans la crypte. Le titre est probablement très ancien. En outre le quartier est aujourd’hui l’objet d’importantes fouilles archéologiques qui ont notamment permis la découverte d’un grand sanctuaire gallo-romain (IIè siècle) ainsi que de nombreuses substructions gallo-romaines. la christianisation du lieu sous le nom de saint Martin n’est sans doute pas un hasard.

L’église est classée aux Monuments historiques PA00097001.

 

The church of Saint-Martin au Val is located about one kilometre south of the medieval city centre of Chartres, in a district on the banks of the Eure. The construction of the present church dates back to the 12th century as the abbey church of a Benedictine monastery and later as the church of a priory, but sarcophagi (of former bishops of Chartres?) from the 6th century have been recognised in the crypt. The title is probably very old. In addition, the area is now the subject of major archaeological excavations which have led to the discovery of a large Gallo-Roman sanctuary (2nd century) as well as numerous Gallo-Roman substructures. The Christianisation of the place under the name of Saint Martin is no doubt not by chance.
