La première église d’Amboise est fondée par saint Martin après y avoir détruit le temple païen en forme de pyramide. Le prêtre Marcel n’avait pas pu l’abattre lui-même. Martin passe la nuit de prière et, le lendemain, une tempête fait s’effondrer le temple. C’est la première église rurale de Touraine (Sulpice Sévère, Troisième dialogue, VIII).

L’actuelle collégiale Saint-Denis abrite un vitrail figurant la vie de saint Martin. Il présente cinq registres, de bas en haut : un charité d’Amiens, la destruction d’une idole, la messe miraculeuse, une ordination et la mort de saint Martin. Datant du XIXe siècle, il est sans doute réalisé par les ateliers Lobin.

         

The first church in Amboise was founded by Saint Martin after destroying the pyramid-shaped pagan temple there. The priest Marcel had not been able to kill him himself. Martin spends the night in prayer, and the next day a storm collapses the temple. It is the first rural church in Touraine (Sulpice Sévère, Third dialogue, VIII).

The current Saint-Denis collegiate church houses a stained glass window depicting the life of Saint Martin. It presents five registers, from bottom to top: a charity of Amiens, the destruction of an idol, the miraculous mass, an ordination and the death of Saint Martin. Dating from the 19th century, it was probably made by the Lobin workshops.
