La statue de saint Martin à Lourdes se trouve au pied de l’escalier droit qui mène à la basilique Notre-Dame du Rosaire.
Saint Martin est représenté en évêque, mitré et barbu, portant chasuble, aube et dalmatique. Il a les mains levées vers le ciel en position du « Notre Père ».

 

Sur le socle de la statue se trouve un panneau en cuivre figurant une scène de charité en bas-relief.
Saint Martin est à cheval, représenté en soldat romain casqué et barbu. Il est en train de couper son manteau avec son épée de la main droite. Le mendiant est à genoux, vêtu d’une tunique et tenant de sa main gauche l’extrémité du manteau.
En arrière-plan, nous distinguons la « Porte d’Amiens » vers laquelle se dirige une garnison de soldats romains.

Au dos du socle se trouve l’inscription :
« A Notre Dame de Lourdes
LE DIOCESE DE TOURS
en son XL pèlerinage annuel
a offert cette statue de
St MARTIN
Glorieux Patron de la Touraine
et de la France
7 septembre 1911 ».

The statue of Saint Martin in Lourdes is located at the foot of the straight staircase leading to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary.
Saint Martin is represented as a bishop, mitred and bearded, wearing chasuble, alb and dalmatic. His hands are raised to heaven in the position of the « Our Father ».

 

On the base of the statue is a copper panel depicting a scene of charity in bas-relief.
Saint Martin is on horseback, depicted as a helmeted and bearded Roman soldier. He is cutting his cloak with his sword in his right hand. The beggar is kneeling, wearing a tunic and holding the end of the cloak in his left hand.
In the background we can see the ‘Gate of Amiens’, towards which a garrison of Roman soldiers is heading.

On the back of the plinth is the inscription :
