L’église Saint-Martin de Szombathely est construite dans la partie Est de Szombathely, au l’endroit où se tenait Sabaria, en Pannonie, la ville natale de saint Martin. Une premier lieu de culte existe depuis le IVe siècle, et une église est fondée au IXe siècle, sans doute déjà consacrée à saint Martin. Elle est reconstruite au XVIIe siècle dans le style baroque et devient l’église des Dominicains. Un oratoire est construit en 1942. Les dominicains quittent les lieux en 1950. Dans l’église se trouve la chapelle Saint-Martin, à l’endroit où, selon la tradition, saint Martin serait né.

Sur le parvis de l’église se trouve une statue de saint Martin qui baptise sa mère et un banc sur lequel est sculpté le casque, le manteau et l’épée de saint Martin.

 

Saint Martin’s Church in Szombathely was built in the eastern part of Szombathely, on the site of Sabaria in Pannonia, the birthplace of Saint Martin. The first place of worship existed in the 4th century, and a church was founded in the 9th century, probably already dedicated to Saint Martin. It was rebuilt in the 17th century in the Baroque style and became the Dominicans’ church. An oratory was built in 1942. The Dominicans left in 1950. Within the church is the chapel of Saint Martin, where, according to tradition, Saint Martin was born.

On the church forecourt is a statue of Saint Martin baptizing his mother and a bench on which is carved Saint Martin’s helmet, cloak and sword.
