L’église Saint-Martin de Split (Crkva Svetog Martina en croate) est l’une des plus petites et plus anciennes églises de Split, située au-dessus de la porte dorée dans le mur nord du palais de Dioclétien. Il s’agirait d’une ancienne passerelle sentinelle transformée en une église Ve et VIe siècles. Au IXe siècle,  sous le règne du duc de Croatie, Trpimir, on ajoute une croix à l’abside et une voûte en berceau préromane. Un clocher est ajouté au XIe siècle (mais il a été détruit) et on grave les inscriptions de la Vierge Marie, du pape Grégoire et de saint Martin sur l’autel. Abandonnée durant l’épidémie de peste noire au milieu du XIVe siècle, c’est à la fin du XIXe siècle que le père Frane Bulic la redécouvre et dirige sa reconstruction, reproduisant l’édifice du VIe siècle. L’église est désormais gardée par les sœurs dominicaines du monastère voisin. Toute petite et très étroite, elle fait 10 mètres de longueur sur une largeur d’1,64 mètres. Un bas relief en bronze figure une charité de saint Martin.

The Church of St. Martin in Split (Crkva Svetog Martina in Croatian) is one of the smallest and oldest churches in Split, located above the Golden Gate in the northern wall of Diocletian’s Palace. It is believed to be a former sentry walkway converted into a church in the 5th and 6th centuries. In the 9th century, during the reign of the Croatian Duke Trpimir, a cross was added to the apse and a pre-Romanesque barrel vault was added. A bell tower was added in the 11th century (but it was destroyed) and inscriptions of the Virgin Mary, Pope Gregory and St. Martin were carved on the altar. Abandoned during the Black Death epidemic in the middle of the 14th century, it was at the end of the 19th century that Father Frane Bulic rediscovered it and directed its reconstruction, reproducing the 6th century building. The church is now guarded by the Dominican sisters of the nearby monastery. It is very small and narrow, 10 metres long and 1.64 metres wide. A bronze bas-relief depicts the charity of Saint Martin.
