Une église existait dès 1067 sous le vocable de San Martino in Guazzolongo (du nom original du quartier). Elle était la possession des chanoines Augustins. L’église Saint-Martin (San Martino) est totalement reconstruite à partir de 1331, à la demande de Bonifacion Novello della Gherardesca, qui souhaitait la confier aux sœurs Clarisses (qui y restèrent jusqu’en 1786). La chapelle du Santissimo Sacramento a été ajoutée en 1395 grâce aux dons d’un citoyen privé. La partie inférieure de la façade en marbre date de la même époque, tandis que la partie supérieure date de 1610. L’église donne son nom au quartier de Pise où elle se trouve, ainsi qu’à la rue qui longe la nef et à la place qui se trouve devant la façade.

Au-dessus de la porte d’entrée, un bas-relief figure une charité de saint Martin. Ce dernier est représenté à cheval, nimbé, étant en train de couper son manteau avec son épée. Le mendiant est déjà en train de mettre le manteau autour de sa taille. Il se situe devant la tête du cheval, est représenté barbu et levant la main droite pour recevoir le reste du manteau.

A church existed as early as 1067 under the name of San Martino in Guazzolongo (from the original name of the district). It was owned by the Augustinian canons. The church of San Martino was completely rebuilt in 1331 at the request of Bonifacion Novello della Gherardesca, who wanted to entrust it to the Poor Clares (who remained there until 1786). The chapel of the Santissimo Sacramento was added in 1395 thanks to donations from a private citizen. The lower part of the marble façade dates from the same period, while the upper part dates from 1610. The church gives its name to the district of Pisa where it is located, as well as to the street that runs alongside the nave and to the square in front of the façade.

Above the entrance door, a bas-relief shows a charity of Saint Martin. The latter is shown on horseback, wearing a nimbus, cutting off his cloak with his sword. The beggar is already putting the cloak around his waist. He is standing in front of the horse’s head, bearded and raising his right hand to receive the rest of the cloak.
