L’église Saint-Martin de Metz apparaît dans un document datant des années 850. Elle a été construite à partir des pierres de l’ancienne enceinte romaine du IIIe siècle. Ces pierres sont encore visibles autour du portail d’entrée.

L’église actuelle date du XIIIe siècle. Le narthex est érigé dans les années 1210-1220 dans un style roman. Le reste de l’édifice, construit dans les décennies suivantes jusqu’à la fin du XIIIe siècle, est gothique. Le chœur et le transept ont été reconstruit au début du XVIe siècle, dans le style gothique flamboyant. Le transept sud a été détruit en 1817 pour des raisons d’urbanisme. Le clocher néogothique est érigé en 1887 sur les plans de l’architecte Conrad Wahn, après une campagne de restauration.

The church of St. Martin in Metz appears in a document dating from the year 850 and was built from the stones of the old Roman wall from the 3rd century. These stones are still visible around the entrance portal.

The present church dates from the 13th century. The narthex was built in the years 1210-1220 in Romanesque style. The rest of the building, built in the following decades until the end of the 13th century, is Gothic. The choir and transept were rebuilt in the early 16th century in the flamboyant Gothic style. The south transept was destroyed in 1817 for town planning reasons. The neo-Gothic bell tower was erected in 1887 to the plans of the architect Conrad Wahn, after a restoration campaign.
