L’église Saint-Martin de Corneilla-la-Rivière est construite au XIe siècle mais a été reconstruite au XIXe siècle suite à un incendie au XVIIe siècle. Elle est mentionnée pour la première fois dans un leg de Guillem, fils de Bernard, comte de Besalu, à l’église en 1034. Elle est consacrée à saint Martin en 1145 par Udalgar, évêque d’Elne. Pourtant, à l’époque, le culte le plus important dans la ville est celui de sainte Agnès, qui semble être la sainte patronne de la paroisse et dont un autel lui est dédié.
L’église abrite une statue figurant saint Martin en évêque, mitré et tenant sa crosse, une autre statue de saint Martin évêque étant disposé dans une niche au-dessus du portail d’entrée. Enfin, un reliquaire de saint Martin est conservé dans une armoire à relique, à l’entrée de l’église. C’est un buste-reliquaire en argent et en émail, d’une hauteur de 58 cm, une largeur de 30 cm et une profondeur de 17 cm. Il figure saint Martin en évêque, portant une mitre sur la tête, avec une tunique surmontée d’une chape. Saint Martin a le visage rond et les yeux en amandes levés vers le ciel, la bouche entrouverte. La relique se trouve sur le socle, présentée sur du velours rouge et entourée d’une paperolle. Sur le fond est écrit le nom « sainte Martin » [sic]. Il date de la fin du XVIIIe siècle-début du XIXe siècle et est versé aux Monuments historiques le 23 juin 2015.
Le blason de la ville figure saint Martin évêque bénissant : « D’or à quatre pals de gueules; à l’écusson ovale de pourpre chargé de saint Martin évêque d’argent, la chasuble et la mitre de gueules, bénissant de sa main dextre et tenant dans sa senestre une crosse épiscopale d’or, brochant sur le tout ».
The church of Saint-Martin in Corneilla-la-Rivière was built in the 11th century but rebuilt in the 19th century following a fire in the 17th century. It is mentioned for the first time in a bequest from Guillem, son of Bernard, Count of Besalu, to the church in 1034. It was consecrated to Saint Martin in 1145 by Udalgar, Bishop of Elne. However, at the time, the most important cult in the town was that of Saint Agnes, who appears to have been the patron saint of the parish and to whom an altar was dedicated.
The church houses a statue of Saint Martin as a bishop, mitred and holding his crozier, with another statue of Saint Martin the bishop in a niche above the entrance portal. Lastly, a reliquary of Saint Martin is kept in a relic cupboard at the entrance to the church. It is a silver and enamel reliquary bust, 58 cm high, 30 cm wide and 17 cm deep. It depicts Saint Martin as a bishop, wearing a mitre on his head and a tunic topped with a cope. Saint Martin has a round face with almond-shaped eyes looking up to heaven and a half-open mouth. The relic is on the plinth, presented on red velvet and surrounded by paper. The name « Saint Martin » [sic] is written on the background. It dates from the late 18th/early 19th century and was listed as a Historic Monument on 23 June 2015.
The town’s coat of arms depicts Saint Martin the bishop blessing: « Gold four pals Gules; on an oval escutcheon Purpure, Saint Martin the bishop silver, chasuble and mitre Gules, blessing with his dexter hand and holding in his sinister an episcopal crozier gold ».
