Fondée au IXe siècle sur un ancien sanctuaire consacré à saint Loup, l’église Saint-Martin de Chablis était une possession de Saint-Martin de Tours qui y ont abrité les reliques de saint Martin durant les invasions normandes.

Elle a été reconstruite au XIIe et au XIIIe siècle en s’inspirant de l’église de Sens. Il y eut un grand incendie en 1678 qui ravagea une grande partie de l’édifice.

L’autel de l’église possède un bas-relief montrant une procession avec deux moines qui portent une châsse au centre de la composition, devant trois moines qui se trouvent sur le porche d’une église. En arrière-plan, le peuple regarde la scène. Cela fait référence au fait que Chablis à conservé les reliques de saint Martin au IXe siècle.

Founded in the 9th century on an ancient sanctuary dedicated to Saint Loup, the church of Saint-Martin de Chablis was a possession of Saint-Martin de Tours who sheltered the relics of Saint Martin there during the Norman invasions.

It was rebuilt in the 12th and 13th centuries based on the church in Sens. There was a great fire in 1678 which destroyed a large part of the building.

The altar of the church has a bas-relief showing a procession with two monks carrying a shrine in the centre of the composition, in front of three monks standing on the porch of a church. In the background, the people are watching the scene. This refers to the fact that Chablis kept the relics of Saint Martin in the 9th century.
