Cette charité  est un tableau peint par El Greco  entre 1597 et 1599; le pauvre et le saint sont tous deux très étirés dans une longue verticale de  193 cm de haut sur 103 cm de large. Il est conservé à la National Gallery of art de Washington . Le tableau a été réalisé pour la chapelle Saint Joseph de Tolède.  Le saint est figuré en jeune chevalier espagnol tandis que le pauvre nu se drape déjà dans le manteau de couleur verte que le saint partage. La proximité physique entre le saint, le cheval et le pauvre est très grande et accentue le geste central à peine esquissé de la charité. La scène st empreinte d’une grande douceur accentuée par le mouvement des deux têtes tournées l’une vers l’autre. Le paysage urbain de Tolède et le pont sur le Tage forment l’arrière plan de la scène. Une copie de cette oeuvre, un petit plus petite a été effectuée par El Greco et se trouve à l’art Institute de Chicago.

This charity is a painting by El Greco between 1597 and 1599; the poor man and the saint are both very stretched out in a long vertical 193 cm high and 103 cm wide. It is kept in the National Gallery of Art in Washington. The painting was made for the Chapel of St. Joseph in Toledo. The saint is depicted as a young Spanish knight, while the naked pauper is already draped in the green cloak that the saint shares. The physical proximity between the saint, the horse and the poor man is very close and accentuates the central, barely sketched gesture of charity. The scene is marked by a great gentleness, accentuated by the movement of the two heads turned towards each other. The urban landscape of Toledo and the bridge over the Tagus form the background of the scene. A slightly smaller copy of this work was made by El Greco and is in the Art Institute of Chicago.
