L’église Saint-Martin de Caen a ses premières fondation au VIIe siècle, a proximité de l’ancienne voie romaine (actuelle rue Saint-Martin), à l’emplacement d’une ancienne nécropole païenne. Il n’existe plus rien de cette première église. Des fouilles archéologiques ont révélées des sépultures datant de cette époque (entre 150 et 200 sarcophages).

Une église romane est construite à la place au XIIe siècle, mais elle est reconstruite dans le style gothique au XVe siècle, au cœur du cimetière. Ce dernier est transféré en 1784-1785 au cimetière des Quatre-Nations. Vendue comme bien national à un particulier en 1793, elle est détruite en 1798. Il reste la rue qui porte le nom de Saint-Martin et qui en garde quelques vestiges, ainsi que la place Saint-Martin.

The church of Saint-Martin de Caen was first founded in the 7th century, near the old Roman road (now rue Saint-Martin), on the site of an old pagan necropolis. There’s nothing left of that first church. Archaeological excavations have revealed burials dating from this period (between 150 and 200 sarcophagi).

A Romanesque church was built instead in the 12th century, but it was rebuilt in the Gothic style in the 15th century, in the heart of the cemetery. The latter was transferred in 1784-1785 to the Quatre-Nations cemetery. Sold as national property to a private individual in 1793, it was destroyed in 1798. There remains the street which bears the name of Saint-Martin and which retains some vestiges, as well as the Place Saint-Martin.
