L’église Saint-Martin d’Ambierle est construite sur le site de la chapelle d’un ancienne abbaye construit durant le Haut-Moyen-âge et déjà dédié à saint Martin. Devenue prieuré lors de son rattachement à Cluny en 1101, la chapelle romane est construite par Odon de Cluny. Au XVe siècle, entre 1450 et 1480, l’église actuelle est construite dans le style gothique, à la suite d’un incendie survenu en 1441. L’église est en croix-latine, avec un clocheton au-dessus de la croisée des transepts. Le toit est en tuile rouge et noir à motifs de croix.

L’ancien prieuré, quant-à-lui, conserve ses bâtiments : logis, communs, hôtellerie et hospice. Il garde son escalier d’honneur et l’ancien logis du prieur au premier étage, les anciens bâtiments de l’hôpital, de l’hôtellerie et du réfectoire, ainsi que les galeries du cloître.

L’édifice est classé aux Monuments historiques en 1860 et inscrit le 22 avril 2010. PA00117423

The church of Saint-Martin d’Ambierle is built on the site of the chapel of an ancient abbey built during the High Middle Ages and already dedicated to Saint Martin. The Romanesque chapel became a priory when it was attached to Cluny in 1101 and was built by Odon de Cluny. In the 15th century, between 1450 and 1480, the present church was built in the Gothic style, following a fire in 1441. The church has a Latin cross floor plan, with a bell tower above the transepts. The roof is made of red and black tiles with a cross pattern.

The former priory retains its buildings: dwelling, outbuildings, hostelry and hospice. It retains its main staircase and the former prior’s dwelling on the first floor, the former hospital, hostelry and refectory buildings, as well as the cloister galleries.

The building was listed as a Historic Monument in 1860 and registered on 22 April 2010. PA00117423
