L’abbaye de Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire fut fondée en 651, mais les chapiteaux qui ornent sa tour-porche datent du XIe’ siècle. Un de ces chapiteaux met en scène saint Martin, en figurant à sa gauche, une scène de charité, et au centre, une gloire de saint Martin.

Dans la scène de charité, saint Martin est représenté debout, nimbé, tenant un bout du manteau de la main gauche et le coupant avec son épée, tenue de la main droite. Le mendiant est accroupi, et tient l’autre bout du manteau entre ses mains. Dans la gloire, saint Martin est au centre, encadré par deux anges, il a les mains levées, paumes vers le public.

La partie droite du chapiteau figure un ange nimbé.

        

The abbey of Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire was founded in 651, but the capitals that adorn its tower-porch date from the 11th century. One of these capitals features Saint Martin, with a scene of charity on his left and a glory of Saint Martin in the centre.

In the scene of charity, St Martin is shown standing, nimbed, holding a piece of the cloak in his left hand and cutting it with his sword, held in his right hand. The beggar is crouching, holding the other end of the cloak in his hands. In the glory, Saint Martin is in the centre, flanked by two angels, with his hands raised, palms towards the public.

The right-hand side of the capital shows a nimbed angel.
