Le plafond peint de la petite église Saint-Martin de Zillis propose en 153 panneaux peints, un programme iconographique qui offre une place à saint Martin, titulaire de l’église; 6 panneaux lui sont réservés qui retracent quelques épisodes de la vie du saint. : le partage du manteau, l’onction sacerdotale, la résurrection d’un mort, la rencontre avec le démon sous les traits du Christ-Roi mais que le saint démasque.
Il est frappant que le saint dans ces 6 épisodes ne soit pas auréolé alors que les apôtres le sont tous; cela participe sans doute d’ une vision dévalorisante de la période post-apostolique entre l’ascension du Christ et son retour final: vision à laquelle participe le commanditaire de l’œuvre. Le baptême ne figure pas mais l’ordination est en parallèle avec le baptême du Christ. Ces six images offrent un modèle de vie épiscopale qui sait triompher de l’imposture diabolique.

The painted ceiling of the small church of Saint-Martin in Zillis offers an iconographic programme in 153 painted panels, which gives a place to Saint Martin, the titular saint of the church; 6 panels are reserved for him, which retrace some episodes of the saint’s life. These include the sharing of the cloak, the anointing of the priesthood, the resurrection of a dead man, and the encounter with the devil in the guise of Christ the King, which the saint unmasks.
It is striking that the saint in these six episodes is not haloed, whereas the apostles are all haloed; this is undoubtedly part of a devaluing vision of the post-apostolic period between the ascension of Christ and his final return: a vision in which the commissioner of the work participates. Baptism is not shown, but ordination is paralleled by the baptism of Christ. These six images offer a model of episcopal life that knows how to triumph over diabolical imposture.
