Situé dans le centre de Florence, place San Martino, l’oratoire des Buonomini di San Martino est, à l’origine, une ancienne église San Martino al Vescovo (qui aurait abrité le mariage de Dante Alighieri avec Gemma Donati). À la fin du Moyen Âge, la ville connaît une réorganisation ecclésiastique et les petites paroisses sont supprimées, dont San Martino al Vescovo. L’église est confiée à la Compagnia dei Buonomini di San Martino, une compagnie fondée en 1441 pour venir en aide aux « pauvres honteux » de la ville, c’est-à-dire les riches familles tombées en disgrâce et qui ne peuvent pas demander l’aumône en public. L’oratoire est décoré de dix fresques présentant les œuvres des Buonomini, le travail des notaires (inventaire et mariage), et deux scènes de la vie de saint Martin, une charité d’Amiens et le songe qui a suivi où le Christ est vêtu du manteau. Ces deux scènes sont situées de part et d’autre d’un buste de saint Antonino de Florence, le fondateur de la Compagnia dei Buonomini. De plus, sur la façade, à côté de la porte, se trouve une représentation de saint Martin en évêque faisant l’aumône, au-dessus du tronc pour les aumônes.

 

Located in the centre of Florence, in Piazza San Martino, the oratory of the Buonomini di San Martino is originally an ancient church of San Martino al Vescovo (which is said to have hosted the wedding of Dante Alighieri to Gemma Donati). At the end of the Middle Ages, the city underwent an ecclesiastical reorganisation and the small parishes were abolished, including San Martino al Vescovo. The church was entrusted to the Compagnia dei Buonomini di San Martino, a company founded in 1441 to help the « shameful poor » of the city, i.e. rich families who had fallen from grace and could not beg for alms in public. The oratory is decorated with ten frescoes showing the works of the Buonomini, the work of the notaries (inventory and marriage), and two scenes from the life of Saint Martin, a charity of Amiens and the dream that followed in which Christ is clothed with the mantle. These two scenes are situated on either side of a bust of St Antonino of Florence, the founder of the Compagnia dei Buonomini. In addition, on the façade, next to the door, there is a representation of St Martin as a bishop giving alms, above the alms box.
