Saint Benoît de Nursie a adapté un ancien temple consacré au dieu Apollon en oratoire et l’a consacré à saint Martin. Les moines quittent les lieux, chassés par les Lombards, en 578. Ils reviennent un siècle plus tard. La basilique Saint-Martin est construite au XIe siècle, achevée en 1090.

L’ensemble est détruit durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, lors des bombardements de la bataille de Monte Cassino (17 janvier-19 mai 1944), puis intégralement reconstruit.

Sous le portique, le frère Vignarelli a conçu une mosaïque représentant le Christ entouré de la Vierge Marie et de saint Martin.

St Benedict of Nursia adapted an ancient temple dedicated to the god Apollo into an oratory and dedicated it to St Martin. The monks left the site in 578, driven out by the Lombards, and returned a century later. The Basilica of Saint Martin was built in the 11th century and completed in 1090.

The complex was destroyed during the Second World War, during the bombardments of the battle of Monte Cassino (17 January-19 May 1944), and then completely rebuilt.

Under the portico, Brother Vignarelli designed a mosaic representing Christ surrounded by the Virgin Mary and Saint Martin.
